England and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

If the groups conclude according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
