Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring celestial beings, demons, and sinister influences growing in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the initial group of heroes who will branch out from the central cast to begin their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be impossible.

Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

Per the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who enjoy a classically intense combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might look out of place, but the actions of the latest installment show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal opening clash with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise initiated the campaign’s events—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks revenge.
  • Kattigan knows the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • But, their position as important members in the influential clan could help the party enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now go with him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern the setting for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by the clan.

This results in them little choice but to head to the northern region in quest for the traitor.

Future Episodes

According to episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the warrior group will not appear next week, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Questers and Schemers parties.

Fans can look forward to discovering which characters will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
